If you ski Bad Gastein you get miles of slopes within the Sportgastein ski area for all abilities, as well as access to the ski Amadé with 850km. All this along with a traditional Alpine setting and some excellent après-ski and hospitality.

Where?

Located in the heart of the Austrian Alps, ski Bad Gastein and get access to the Gasteinertal sportgastein ski area, one of Austria's biggest skiing and snowboarding areas. Famous for it's spas and building that date back to the "Belle Époque", this resort is world renowned for it's flair and hospitality. Access is easy with Salzburg airport just 1.5 hours away and a train station in town if you want to get here that way!

On the slopes

Ski Austria and just once you should ski Bad Gastein. Set at 1000m, there's over 200km of pistes in the Gastein Valley surrounding the resort itself, so there really is something that's suitable for all levels. A world famous spa resort, close to home there's a good range of slopes for intermediates and advanced skiers and boarders on the Stubnerkogel mountain.

This area is not recommended for absolute beginners, with the nursery slopes generally rated as either too steep or too short, however, more advanced skiers and boarders will enjoy the off-piste runs at Sportgastein and Graukogel. Boarders will find there is now a park and half-pipe, but might not enjoy the high number of draglifts. It's also in the Ski Amadé ski region that has ober 850km of slopes - which means you can ski all week and almost never take the same piste twice.

Ski area

If you ski Bad Gastein, you are also in the ski region of SkiAmadé.

Off the slopes

Eating out offers an impressive range of choices, over 35 in all, and the après-ski is good, with a choice of lively nightspots, and even a casino if you fancy a flutter. Away from the skiing there is a great choice of activities, including ice skating, curling, tobogganing, sleigh rides, ice climbing, and snow shoe walking. Overall this is an attractive town with great aprés-ski, though probably not a good choice for a family holiday with small children.

WE LIKE

  • Extensive, varied slopes for all except absolute beginners
  • Lots of good, atmospheric traditional restaurants (over 100)
  • Linked to the Ski Amadé ski region - with amazing pistes and off-piste

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Absolute Beginners aren't overly catered for with no dedicated area as such
  • There's no real challenges close to the resort for red or black skiers and boarders
  • Not great for family ski holidays if you have small children
