Is France the Best Place for a Ski Holiday?

Around 350,000 Brits think it is, as France is the number one destination for a ski holiday for 34.8% of skiers and boarders. So why is France so popular?

Location is everything and France has some great resorts that are easily accessible. It's also a historical thing for British skiers but there is more to it than that :

  • Good snow on the whole as some cracking ski resorts
  • Ski passes are still good value when you consider the large connected ski areas
  • The simplicity of travel from the UK - 4 key airports for the Alps as well ability to drive or train it!

So finding great ski resorts close to one of the four main airports in France is relatively easy.

Which French Airport is Best?

Now this is a difficult one to answer as it depends on where you are in the UK (as to where you can fly to) and also which resort you want to go to. The main airport by passenger volume is Geneva and the French side of the airport is surprisingly under-used by UK travellers (most flying to the Swiss side). Geneva opens up a lot of great resorts and due to it's size has lots of flights from UK airports at varying times.

Chambéry airport also provides access to a large number of ski resorts in both France and Italy. Within 2 hours transfer time are resorts such as Megève, Courchevel, La Plagne, Val Thorens and even Morzine. The only thing to be aware of is in bad snow, Chambéry has been known to be closed down, which rarely happens with Geneva airport.

The other airports including Lyon, provide you with access to ski resorts in France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Andorra. So whether your ski holidays are weekend breaks or longer affairs, why not use our widget on the airport pages to help you find ones that are perfect for your needs.
