Ski Les Gets and you're in the Portes du Soleil ski area. Just over an hour from Geneva, skiing and snowboarding holidays here offer you good facilities and are perfect for families as well as those looking for an authentic village.

Where?

For skiing and snowboarding in France, ski Les Gets in under 90 minutes thanks to it's road and air links. It opens up the huge possibilities of the massive French ski area of Portes du Soleil. The sheer numbers are staggering - 206 lifts (14 cableways, 82 chairs, 110 drags) and an incredible 650km of pistes to explore in the larger ski area to which you will be connected. This is an easy area to reach, with airports at Geneva and Chambéry the two closest access points from Britain.

On the slopes

When you ski Les Gets, this lets you explore two main areas locally, the Chavannes Bowl and Mont-Cheri, ski holidays in this resort offer some great skiing and snowboarding - not to mention the larger ski area. There's large forested slopes either side of the valley providing some great runs.

Mont Cheri has wide open south facing slopes, mostly reds and blues, and is also the home of the snow park, with its jumps, rails and platforms. There's also plenty of piste of interest to snow boarders. The Chavannes Bowl is very popular, and is filled with blues, reds and some blacks. Off piste is available as well as some good off-piste runs through the trees.

Ski area

If you ski Les Gets you are also in the ski region of Portes du Soleil.

Off the slopes

There's a lovely mix of accommodation, including traditional Savoyard chalets and more modern wooden-and-stone buildings - whichever you choose they are built to fit in with the alpine surroundings, and many offer ski-to-your-door convenience. This is a good place to bring kids with an excellent ski school, and a variety of reasonably priced restaurants. The après-ski is not as lively as some other resorts, with just a couple of bars to entertain the late night crowd.

WE LIKE

  • Excellent for families. Short transfer from Geneva and a lot of family ski companies are here. Links into the huge ski area of the Portes du Soleil.
  • Nice traditional Savoyard village with a great alpine atmosphere - and some ski-in ski-out too.
  • Loads of off-piste and when you do come back on piste - few queues at the lifts.

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Few challenging pistes at advanced or expert level. Not a great party town, if you want this head to Morzine.
  • To get to Avoriaz and the main Portes du Soleil circuit is a real slog, unless you drive to Ardent.
  • Due to altitude the snow can be a hit and miss affair in early or late season. Book late to be assured of snow.
