Sochi will be the venue for the Winter Games 2014 and as a result it will see a lot of development over the next year. Essentially Sochi is not one resort but two-Rosa Khotar and Gazprom. Combined it is planned that they will offer 150km of runs after the Olympics with 58 state of the art lifts. Where?
Sochi is a city on the Black Sea Coast. The best way to get there is by air, the Sochi International Airport is located near the village of Adler. You can get a direct flight to Sochi from Istanbul, Belgrade and Tashkent but if travelling from the UK you will need to fly first to Moscow or St Petersburg and then grab an internal flight.

On The Slopes
After the Olympics more ski terrain will be unveiled but at present if you are a beginner head to Gazprom. Do beware though the levels of English in some of the ski schools isn't brilliant. For intermediate and advanced skiers head to Rosa Khatar which is also very good for off piste skiing. The blacks are steep here, some with a vertical drop of over 1 km. Try and find the time to visit Mountain Carousel which has some really testing bowls for you to try out.
Off the slopes
Much of the apres ski in Russia is focused on hotel bars so you don't necessarily get the same apres ski atmosphere that you get in traditional European resorts. Restaurants also tend to be in hotels. Activities off the slopes include jeeping, snowmobiling, spas and Russian baths.
In summary this will be unlike anywhere you have skied before, but if you want to try something culturally very different and experience slopes used in the Olympics why not try Sochi?
