Ski Resorts in Russia

The near arctic climate of a Russian winter lends itself perfectly to winter sports. While they are infamous for vanquishing armies of invaders, those who come seeking a winter wonderland are far from vanquished. Skiing and snowboarding runs in Russia are amongst the best in Europe and they are attracting more tourists from outside Russia, helped probably by the winter Olympic games hosted in Sochi.

Whilst thinking of a Russian winter might make you want to rush straight out and buy a rabbit ushanka and a warm coat, as far as winter sports are concerned the colder the better. A great deal of interest has been focussed on the winter sports facilities in Russia, particularly since it won the opportunity to host the 2014 winter Olympics. Those resorts that were lacking in facilities are undergoing a major rejuvenation and will soon rival the best in Europe.

What Is The Atmosphere Like?

The winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 did much to open Russia up to more tourism. There is a determination here to build upon that success and continue to develop ski tourism.

Who Will Enjoy It?

If the question was; who wouldn't enjoy it? The answer would be a resounding nobody! For those with a good head for heights, the Caucus Mountains are home to what is arguably the highest mountain in Europe, Mount Elbrus. Standing at 5633m, over a metre higher than Mont Blanc, it allows for skiing and snowboarding all year round and it has been said that Mount Elbrus will be Europe's last stand against global warming.

How Many Resorts Are There?

Altogether there are over 100 skiing areas in Russia, far too many to name.  Mt. Elbrus, as you would expect, is one of the most popular and Cheget Polyana has also carved itself a reputation as a quality resort with plenty to offer both on and off the piste.

Staying in Russia

There are many hotels scattered around the Russian ski areas, as well as charming huts and lodges which nestle on the mountainsides. The huts tend to have dormitory type accommodation which is ideal for those travelling on a budget, but if you are travelling as a couple and want some privacy a private lodge or hotel is highly recommended.

Getting Here

Sochi is probably one of the most accessible ski areas for visitors from the UK. If travelling from the UK you first need to get to Moscow. From Moscow you can get an internal flight to Sochi which takes about 2 hours, or you can take a train.
