As one of the lesser known ski areas, Serre Chavalier might be one of France's best kept secrets; it certainly offers an excellent winter sports holiday to all who visit. The ski area is close to the Italian border, and has an unbeatable mix of sunshine and a good weather record.
There are four villages that make up Serre Chavalier; Villeneuve, Brian?on, Chantemerle, and Montier, all linked by ski bus. The piste factfile contains details of 250km of runs. There are nursery slopes and ski schools in each village, though skiers take a big step up to the next level of runs, as the remaining area is full of fast paced blue/red runs, and some good black runs for the experts.
Serre Chavalier is also becoming known for it's varied off piste, which is attracting a growing number of snowboarders, looking for something more than the snow park and half pipe have to offer.
In terms of accommodation, Villeneuve is popular with travel agents, who also rate providers in the historical village of Brian?on. Don't expect a full on après ski scene here, but the bars, restaurants and shops are of good quality. Off slope activities around the villages include sleigh rides, night skiing, and ice driving. If all this sounds like your kind of holiday destination, then transfers are available from Turin (2 hours 30 minutes) or Chambéry (3 hours 45 minutes).
