Ski Vars

Ski Vars and find yourself in the largest ski area in the Southern French Alps adjacent to Risoul. With quiet slopes and easy access, there's over 170kms of piste awaiting you in the La Forêt Blanche ski area - you won't be disappointed.

Where

If you ski Vars, you'll find that most the other skiers are French. This ski resort hasn't appeared in most major brochures, so the lift queues are short, the slopes quiet. As part of the largest domain in the Southern French Alps, you'll have over 170km of pistes available to you, with a good choice of slopes. Transfer is relatively straight-forwar if unfortunately over 2 hours from any airport.

On the slopes

Beginners will love to ski Vars - the whole area is accessible via green and blue slopes, and you can ski from Risoul to Vars (the two resorts share a common lift pass) entirely on blue pistes. For intermediates there are plenty of wide-open runs both above and below the tree-line, while expert skiers will find 11 black pistes and plenty of good off-piste terrain to explore.

If you need a challenge, why not try the mogul run down back down to the resort or why not try what's generally viewed as the toughest - the Cuni piste. Vars also has a permanent speed skiing course that allows you to zoom down the slopes at up to 160 kilometres per hour (100 mph). Not your thing - then the parallel slalom course or 'boarder cross' course may well be the thing to challenge you.

Ski area :

If you ski Vars you are also in the ski region of La Forêt Blanche along with the following resorts; blanche.

Off the slopes

This is a quiet resort, a good place to escape the crowds while enjoying some good skiing - the sun shines for over 300 days a year, perfect when you're on a tree-lined run. There is a reasonable selection of restaurants, although if it's lively nightlife you are after, you'll have to wait for the the weekend, when things pick up a bit. For an 'off the beaten track' ski resort, the nightlife can be lively and there's nearly always something going on in a bar or night club somewhere.

WE LIKE

  • Slopes best suited for beginners to intermediate level - but pistes for all abilities are good
  • A good record on the snow front - throughout the season
  • A compatc purpose built resort that's set amongst the trees with a great atmosphere

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Some lifts are still very slow - especially going between Vars and Risoul
  • If you want good off-piste, you need to head over to Risoul
  • Drinking out and eating out to some extent is expensive - especially with Euro exchange rates
