Where
Ski Riksgränsen and you will always get plenty of snow - it's the world's northernmost ski resort in the wilderness, 1000 miles north of Stockholm, 150 miles inside the Artic Circle and and in the Lapland region of Sweden. There's fifteen pistes offering 21kms of varied terrain but tons of off piste - 14 'runs' according to the tourist board. It is best reached via a flight from Stockholm to Kiruna's domestic airport, from where you can take the bus or train. This is one resort on most avid skiers "must do before I die" list!
On the slopes
Ski Riksgränsen and you'll find it perfect for intermediates - around 55% of the pistes are for beginners and intermediates alone. Another 40% is for advanced skiers and snowboarders and then experts get 5% on-piste! Beginners will find some easy slopes on which to find their feet, but experts are best served by heading off piste. There are six ski lifts with an hourly uplift capacity of 7,400 people, so lines are short. There are also great cross-country opportunities, over 30 km of trails in all.
Off the slopes
Set amid spectacular Arctic scenery, Riksgränsen ski resort is a remote village ski resort has just one hotel with beds for 500 people - however, it also has a great restaurant and bar, stocked with some fine wines!
There are plenty of other activities to keep you busy in the area, including guided ski trips, snowmobile trips, fjord cruises, heli-skiing, ice fishing, mountaineering, dog-sledding and backpack country skiing. You can also Lapland's biggest community (Kiruna), which is home to the world's largest underground mine.
