Ski Red Mountain

Ski Red Mountain and as a family you will have great facilities for children. However, whether you are skiing or snowboarding, the two mountains are year after year being awarded the 'best' for slopes, tree-lines, powder, overall resort and more.

Where

If you choose to ski Red Mountain you will be close to the US border in south-central British Columbia. This ski resort is great for families as you get ski programmes for ages three to 12 years, and childcare for kids from 18 months to six years. It's one of the oldest ski resorts in Canada, yet you'll find 88 slopes with a vertical drop of almost 900m. Access from the airport is not too bad - on a good day! But this resort is regarded as the the hidden jewel of BC's Kootenay Rockies region.

On the slopes

If you ski Red Mountain in Canada, you are on the site of the first World Cup race ever held in Canada. Known for it's treelined pistes, skiing and snowboarding is superb - especially for experts and advanced riders. With two mountains - Red, best for beginners, and Granite Mountain, which has more challenging slopes, the longest run, Long Squaw, is four kilometres.

There's 88 trails between the two mountains, falling almost 900m, and the 6 lifts, which include two high-speed quads, can carry up to 10,700 people per hour. On a powder day - the conditions are utterly superb! There's also a great terrain park, easy-to-access backcountry(off -piste), cross country skiing and more.

Off the slopes

Accommodation for Red Mountain ski resort is actually in the town of Rossland, a mix of hotels, motels, condos, bed-and-breakfasts and guest homes. Rossland is a historic gold mining city - so there's plenty of authenticity here! There's good restaurants on the slopes, while Rafter's Lounge and Gypsy at Red, both in Rossland, provide the après-ski. When you are tired of the slopes you will find that other activities abound, including ice-fishing, ice-skating, mountaineering, sleigh riding, snowmobiling, skidooing and tubing. This is a great resort for everyone.

WE LIKE

  • Two mountains offering all the slopes and off-piste you could ask for
  • The slopes are not crowded and offer tree-lined runs and some wide pistes too
  • The town feels like a real ski resort and has some great ski-in ski-out too

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Transfers a bit of a pain - especially as you have to go past some other excellent resorts like Fernie or Kimberley
  • Lifts are a little slow - but all the better to recover from all the powder!
  • Can get cold - bittelry cold - but then you wrap up warm!
