Ski Obertauern

When you ski Obertauern you may well recognise the background from the Beatles video for 'Help'? With tons of snow covered trails for skiers of all ages, skiing and snowboarding in this Austrian resort is particularly good for intermediates.

Where

Ski Obertauern and you are located in the high altitudes of the Radstadter Tavern in Austria. This ski resort can be easily reached via rail or flights into major airports and a short transfer. Once you are here, having a car is not essential thatnks to a well laid out village and great public transportation around the area and slopes. We recommend Salzburg or Innsbruck airports.

On the slopes

With about 100km of trails across more than 60 pistes the Obertauern ski resort is one of the Austrian resorts where snow is guaranteed. The village itself is based at 1738m and is a great base for your winter break. The slopes lend themselves perfectly to intermediate skiers and boarders however the resort caters well to many different skiing levels with 22 for beginners - this is a great family resort with lots of facilities and beginner slopes too. There's a further 35 for intermediate and then 5 marked black runs for advanced/experts.

The 25 lifts and one cable car makes it easy to get around the slopes which are uniquely form a circle around the resort so it's easy to navigate the slopes and always end up at a finish point that you can recognize. Snowboarders also enjoy the snow covered slopes with a snowboard park that caters especially to their needs when they are off the slopes themselves. Overall a great place for a winter break.

Off the slopes

There is plenty to do in Obertauern both in terms of après ski activities and other fun filled family activities making it a nice all around retreat. For those who enjoy pop culture, you may want to take a tour through the village to check the areas in which the Beatles filmed. There's also plenty of local shops and restaurants to try out as well as a lively pub and nightclub scene so that you can relax off the slopes if this is your holiday goal. For families there are plenty of other activities which include but are not limited to a fitness room, bowling, tennis, walking paths, squash, and of course more local shops.

WE LIKE

  • Excellent snow record with some great off piste areas
  • Slopes for all abilities - but particularly good for intermediates with more than 50% of the pistes
  • Is good for families as there's some good easy runs, coupled with good ski schools

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Village lacks traditional charm and spreads along the pass a long way
  • Although classed as high altitude, there's a limited vertical
  • It's quite exposed on the mountains, so lifts can get closed with high winds
