Ernest Hemingway probably made Schruns more famous than it would otherwise be. He visited here in 1925 and fell in love with it long before it became the ski resort it is today. It is one of the first areas  you will reach in the Montafon ski area.

Where?

Located close to the Swiss and Italian border Schruns is the main town in Montafon and is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Verwall and Ratikon.The railway Montafonerbahn ends here and the buses start from here to all the other ski resorts in the valley. Munich airport has a transfer time of approximately three hours. Alternatively you can fly to Zurich and then take a train to Schruns, which only involves one change.

On the slopes

The skiing above Schruns tales place in the Hochjoch ski area that is also accessed by the resort of Silbertal. The skiing in this area is almost all suited to beginners and intermediates and is part of the larger Montafon ski area.  There is a childrens learning area and a beginners ski area in the resorts mid station. In the Montafon ski area the Silvretta Nova is possibly the best ski resort, Gargellen is the highest and the Golm ski area, close to Schruns, is also good for intermediates.So you certainly wont get bored here as you can access so many other resorts within the region.

Off the slopes

Schruns is the principal town in the Montafon ski area and so has a good range of bars and restaurants,to be precise,14 bars and 22 restaurants. There are also a good range of winter sports shops.Nightlife is pretty lively here.You can also enjoy yourself off the slopes at the Aktivpark Montafon, Vorarlbergs largest recreational park-with an alpine swimming pool, forest rope park and cycling. Schruns has 3,600 beds available in a good choice of hotels, apartments and chalets. There are a good choice of 4* hotels here including Hotel Lowen and Hotel Taube which still celebrate the fact that Ernest Hemingway stayed there back in the 1920's!
