Where

Ski Killington for the biggest ski area in New England. As one of the East's first ski resorts to open each year and one of the last to close, access is relatively painless fomr the UK. If you're driving it's 3-4 hrs from Boston, and with 22 ski lifts covering six mountains and offering 1,182 acres of tree-lined runs, the skiing is varied.

On the slopes

If you choose to ski Killington, it's great for intermediates, with close to 40% of the 141 trails designated for this level. However, with this much terrain, everyone will be happy - 22 lifts cover 1,182 acres of slopes. Although the snow is usually pretty reliable, backup is provided by snowmaking machines that cover 70 percent of the slopes. Boarders are also well catered for with a beach super-pipe, three terrain parks with jibs, table-tops, kickers and even a boardercross available. So skiing and snowboarding in Vermont is going to please almost everyone in your party. Recent changes to the mountain trails have removed some of the more exciting and challenging, but there's still plenty for everyone.

Apràs-ski is big here - Killington ski resort is a big party town - with favourite spot including the Birchridge Inn and Hemingway's for the gourmet crowd, while for those on a more modest budget Pizza Jerk has great pizzas, as does Outback bar, with its roaring fire. Away from the slopes you can visit some lovely New England towns, or if shopping is your game, head to the factory outlet shops in Manchester to stock up on DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger and Nike.
