Whiteface ski area (sometimes referred to as White Face) is located just 10 miles from Lake Placid and boasts some of the best skiing east of the Rockies. This is a big mountain that will offer every level of skier plenty of challenge. This area was the testing ground of the 1932 and 1980 winter Olympic Games. The public has access to bob sled and luge runs and even a ski jump that was rebuilt into a toboggan slide.

Where

Whiteface is located in a little town called Wilmington. The easiest way to get there is to fly into Lake Clear Airport which is 15 minutes away, or into Plattsburgh which is located 50 minutes away. Adirondack Regional Airport is located about 40kms from Whiteface Mountain. Travel by bus or car is about 6.5 hours from New York.

On the Slopes

The Slides is an extreme terrain area that is only open when natural snow cover is sufficient. It is great for experts and is considered as double back diamond skiing. However, there is still plenty of skiing for intermediates who enjoy cruisers from the summit and views that make the trek up the hill completely worth it. Whiteface weather can be windy and cold due to the northern exposure. Newer blue trails and a learning area for children are also great for  younger less experienced skiers.

Ski area

If you ski Whiteface Mountain you are also in the state of New York.

Off the Slopes

There are many bistros, bookshops, bars and restaurants in this authentic village. The town has a vibrant and athletic energy to it, likely due to its history of Olympic involvement. Just a short distance from the village, you will find the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery with a double decker restaurant overlooking the south part of Mirror Lake. Wise Guys is a daytime sports bar and energetic club by night. Accommodation is flexible and varied to suit any taste. Lake Placid always has activities and events happening throughout the ski season aside from ski jump tours, snow shoeing, gondola rides, ice skating and more.

WE LIKE

  • The skiing is particularly good for expert and intermediate skiers.
  • Host to world cup snowboarding events, the terrain parks are really good.
  • The biggest vertical in Eastern North America. Good sports facilities off the slopes including bobsled rides, skeleton and speed skating.

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Lift passes here are far more expensive than other US ski resorts.
