If you ski Zentralschweiz, as the name might suggest to some, this is a ski area in central Switzerland, close to Lake Lucerne. The villages in this area include Andermatt, and Engelberg which lies below the Titlis glacier.
If you ski Zentralschweiz, if you visit Andermatt often you will be heading to Gemstock with its famous views, and equally famous ski runs. The Bernhard Russi was one of the first alpine runs created for those who like to carve through the snow. Of the remaining pistes in the resort, 40km are black runs, 57 km are red, and 28km are blue runs for beginners. There's a good selection of pistes for all ability levels, with 2 terrain parks and a half pipe for snowboarders.
The picturesque village of Engelberg and the surrounding areas also cater well for both skiers and snowboarders. There are a small number of good quality slopes for beginners and families in Brünni, while intermediate and advanced skiers will enjoy long runs over the Titlis glacier, which is snow assured throughout the season. Along with the 82km of piste there is a boardpark, and some excellent off piste skiing.
Zentralschwiez isn't just about Engelberg, and Andermatt though; there are small villages scattered throughout the area, all with access to ski areas ranging from 10km to around 50km. Some areas cater for beginners and intermediates, while others have a number of runs to suit all abilities.
Off the slopes there's plenty to explore in Zentralschwiez, with the stunning Lake Lucerne nearby, and evidence of swiss culture and architecture all around. The villages, especially the larger ones, are packed with shops, bars, and restaurants. Engelberg is also home to 'Wet and Wild', a snow amusement park, and a famous revolving cable car that goes up to the peak of Mt Titlis.
Depending on where you stay in the area, the ski season could start as early as mid November, and not finish until May. There's plenty of time to visit, and with transfers only 2 hours from Zurich airport, getting here couldn't be easier. Why not explore all central Switzerland has to offer? You won't be disappointed.
