Ski Andermatt

Ski Andermatt in Switzerland for those who enjoy their skiing but don't need a vibrant après-ski scene. A slightly older ski resort, it offers traditional Swiss Alp atmoshpere and quiet slopes.

Where

If you ski Andermatt this year, then it may pay to do some research. Just 140km from Zürich, it has become less popular in recent years thanks to older lifts and more sparkly ski resorts nearby - but then you get no crowds! This is a great place for those who like to go off piste or ski touring. Access is fairly simple from Zürich which is good for transfer day.

On the slopes

Ski Andermatt - but not if you are a beginner. It is best as a ski resort for intermediates and those who enjoy going off piste or ski touring. The snow is good, there's a reasonable range of slopes (56km), but it's at its best when you go off-piste up on the Gemsstock. The lifts aren't the most high-tech - indeed you are much more likely to run into the Swiss army training here than the high fashion crowd. The quality opf the snow and therefore the skiing and snowboarding is generally good though.

Ski area :

If you ski Andermatt you are also in the Swiss ski region of Central Switzerland.

Off the slopes

Andermatt is still a traditional village, with narrow cobbled streets, lots of bars and restaurants. There's plenty of slope-side accommodation in the village, but don't expect spectacular views - the army barracks aren't exactly scenic! Après-ski is strictly limited - there's not much to do here other than ski.

RESORT GOOD POINTS

  • Attractive, traditional village high up in the Swiss Alps
  • Excellent snow record and a long season
  • Some excellent steep pistes, and great off-piste terrain

RESORT BAD POINTS

  • Unsuitable for beginners as only a few challenging Blues
  • Limited runs - although some long off-piste sections!
  • Little English spoken - but then that's the charm!
