Ski Resorts in Macedonia

The innocuous former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is a little country with loads of potential. It has a big advantage over the other Balkan states in that is has decent mountains and lends itself perfectly to winter sports holidays, particularly as the snow stays until the end of May. the ski season lasts for almost 6 months.

Whilst the current infrastructure of the resorts does not match up to the premier resorts around the world, there are still several resorts in Macedonia worth visiting. It is also incredibly cheap for accommodation, food and ski passes. Word is spreading fast so expect a major overhaul of its resorts in the near future. I f you want to take advantage of the great prices and its unspoilt charm, its worth going sooner rather than later.

What Is The Atmosphere Like?

Going on a winter trip to Macedonia is like stepping back in time. It is not an old fashioned and outdated country by any means but they are incredibly proud of their Balkan heritage and have retained the olde worlde traditional charm that you only expect to see in picture books.

Who Will Enjoy It?

There is plenty for all to enjoy in the picturesque winter wonderland of Macedonia. There are slopes to suit all abilities and have FIS approved slopes for slalom and freestyling too. If you are a snowboarder you are also well catered for, and even if you have no intention of getting on a pair of skis or a board the stunning landscapes and the numerous shops, bars and restaurants will keep everybody happy.

How Many Resorts Are There?

There are only 2 main resorts in Macedonia; Popova Sapka and Zare Lazarevski, the former being the #1 resort. Popova is a large resort  filled with all manner of bars, restaurants and shops. It has hosted both European and Balkan skiing championships as well as the Sar cup every February. The maximum skiable height here is 2501m and the high altitude guarantees great snow and a long winter season. Another resort, Ski Kosuf, is one mainly used by locals and a major facelift is planned for the start of next season.

Staying in Macedonia

The accommodation in the ski resorts of Macedonia is best described as cheap and cheerful, yet clean and comfortable. You won't find your luxury hotels here and to be honest you don't need them. The smaller hotels and guest houses are perfectly adequate and represent great value for money.

Getting Here

One of the best ways to get on the slopes is to fly into Skopje airport. Whizz Air, a budget airline, flies from London Luton offering good low cost deals.
