On the slopes
The immediate Santa Caterina ski resort has ten slopes totalling up to 22kms of skiing distance with a fairly distributed ratio of trails for skiers. Overall access to 17 slopes and 35km means there something for everyone. 58% are for intermediate skiers and beginners and experts have about 21% of the remaining trails each. Additionally, there are 20 km of cross country ski slopes and a ski school for those who want to learn on their holiday or improve their sport.
With a vertical descent that weighs in at 989m and a top elevation of 2,726m there are plenty of sights to see during the decline and plenty of challenges for those who choose to take them on. Since it is part of the Alta Valtellina region, you can also reach trails from seven other ski resorts if you use the bus and lift services provided by the Santa Caterina ski resort.
Ski area :
If you ski Santa Caterina you are also in the ski region of the Alta Valtellina along with the following resorts; Bormio, Livigno, Santa Caterina
.
Off the slopes
While not on the slopes many people enjoy travelling the national park through a ski tour and also mountain climbing. With an ice-skating rink at the Ortles-Clevedale Mountain near the Santa Caterina ski resort area and a children's mini-club nearby children will also enjoy their holiday thoroughly.
Since the small town near the resort has only seven restaurants and five local shops the area is known for providing a wonderful family and private couple atmosphere. For those who want a more raucous environment, there are plenty of bars and nightclubs at many of the nearby resorts linked by public transportation.
WE LIKE
- Good slopes for beginners and intermediates
- Snowsure and with good snow conditions through the season, it's altitude means lots of sun too
- Village has kept all it's original charm as it's grown into a good ski resort
|
WE DON'T LIKE
- A lot of slopes are NW facing so in winter with no direct sun can be bitterly cold
- Half term weeks in Feb are best avoided if you can - as it does get a lot busier (but still nothing like French resorts!)
- Not a lively aprés ski village - it has a modest number of fairly calm bars and pubs
