On the slopes
Located beneath the 2680m Le Chalvet mountain, you can ski Montgenèvre which is at the Western end of the Milky Way and is the only French resort in that ski area. With pistes for all abilities, they also lead right into the village and across the border to Claviere.
Snowboarders can enjoy the pistes as well as the terrain park with a half-pipe in the Gondrans area. Across the road you'll find direct access towards the Monti della Luna and the long runs to Cesana Torinese. Snow-cannons were added for the Turin Olympics, so coverage is consistent even when the weather isn't!
Ski area :
If you ski Montgenèvre you are also in the ski region of Milky Way along with the following resorts; Claviere, Montgenèvre, Pragelato, San Sicario, Sauze d Oulx, Sestriere
.
Off the slopes
Montgenèvre is a lovely old village (in parts) with a history gong back to medieval times. There's a good range of restaurants offering both local specialities and international dishes. Although the après-ski is not extensive, there are several good bars and a couple of discos. The main draw is the access to the Milky Way, and the lower costs once you cross the border into Italy - it's well worth skiing across the border for lunch, or taking a drive in the evening.
WE LIKE
- Good snow record and local slopes largely north-facing (usually the best snow in the Milky Way)
- Plenty of intermediate cruising and good, convenient nursery slopes
- A lot of accommodation close to the slopes / on them for ski-in ski-out
|
WE DON'T LIKE
- If nearby resorts in Italy have poor snow, all the queues and crowds end up here
- Lots of slow lifts and mainly short runs in local area
- Little to challenge experts on-piste - but some good off piste stuff
