Ski Vaujany and combine the charms of a sleepy village with access to a huge ski area in Les Grandes Rousses. Great conditions for skiing and snowboarding and pistes for all levels and abilities - this is also becoming a good ski weekend destination.

Where?

When you ski Vaujany, you can marvel in the fact that this ski resort is only possible thanks to a 1980s hydro-electric scheme. The villagers received a vast sum of money, which they invested in a state-of-the art 160-person cable car to link them to one of France's biggest ski areas, Alpe d'Huez. Which means there's access to 273 pistes covering 225km. Access is good from airports and on roads and there's 5 airports within 2 hours with Grenoble and Chambéry being the closest.

On the slopes

If you ski Vaujany, the ski resort offers good skiing and snowboarding for all levels, with intermediates and beginners particularly well catered for. Vaujany has 70km of piste, and as part of Les Grandes Rousses Ski Area with access to 273 pistes at Alpe d'Huez, Auris-en-Oisans, Oz-en-Oisans and Villard Reculas. The cable car system takes you from the village all the way up to 3096m with views out across Mont Blanc, the Grand Paradis, the Meije and the Ecrin National Park.

There's some great off piste close to home and across the ski area. Following a big snowfall at the end of the working week, weekends can get a lot busier with those keen to make the most of it.

Ski area

If you ski Vaujany you are also in the ski region of Les Grandes Rousses.

Off the slopes

The charm of Vaujany lies in its ability to hold on to its traditional ways. In this charming village you will find family farms selling cheese, butter, milk, honey and fruit conserves, side by side with access to world class skiing. Though not the liveliest resort, there are plenty of good restaurants and bars, and even a nightclub. Other activities include swimming, skating and trekking.

WE LIKE

  • Good selection of runs - probably best suited for beginners and intermediates.
  • Part of the massive Alpe d'Huez ski area, linked by big modern lift system. Authentic alpine village with above average sunshine.
  • Great for family holidays with lots of pistes and children's activites.

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Close to home advanced and expert skiers and boarders will be frustrated. Nursery slopes nightmare for beginner boarders due to long drag lift.
  • Getting busier by the year - too many good things said about the resort. Very few shops in the resort.
  • Nightlife and aprés-ski is low key - this is not a big party resort.
