On the slopes
If you ski Kicking Horse then intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders will get the most out of all the runs. This is a great ski resort in which to learn as it has some excellent beginner terrain. A good percentage of the 106 slopes are intermediate/advanced, with some great long runs - the longest is 10k! The lifts can transport 14,000 people, keeping the lines short provided it's not a busy period or the start of the morning.
When lunchtime comes, be sure to try the Eagle's Eye restaurant, Canada's highest at 2,310m. A great way to undertake your first skiing and snowboarding expedition in the heatr of the Canadian Rockies.
Off the slopes
Accommodation in Kicking Horse includes townhouses and a lodge with ski-in/ski-out accessibility, and several bed-and-breakfasts, chalets, hotels and motels nearby. Most of the après-ski is in the town of Golden, and other activities in the area include telemark skiing, snowshoeing, ice-climbing and flight-sightseeing. The world's largest enclosed grizzly bear refuge is also close by. Other nearby resorts include Panorama Mountain ski resort, and Lake Louise just over an hour's drive to the east.
For the apregrave;s ski drinks you have a number of places including "Whitetooth Grill" with live bands and DJs every weekend, the "Scottish pub" in the Highland Lodge with loads of whisky to choose from and many other bars and pubs throughout the village.
WE LIKE
- Great terrain for experts and some for adventurous intermediates with bowls and tight chutes everywhere
- Big vertical served by a fast lift system which opens up the whole mountain all day long
- Splendid mountain-top restaurant with a green run to finish off with afterwards
|
WE DON'T LIKE
- Gondola to the top can get really busy and therefore you have long queues to contend with
- The lower slopes do not provide much challenge beyond beginner level
- There's not a lot of partying off the slopes - modest apres-ski describes it nicely
