On the slopes

This winter, ski Zell am Ziller for a great range of skiing and snowboarding pistes for all abilities. There's some gentle nursery slopes to ensure learners get the right start, thanks to some excellent ski schools. The Ziller Valley offers so much for intermediate's with more than 600km of piste that include the Hintertux Glacier as well as the large network that is Hochzillertal/Hochfügen. All resorts are linked by ski buses or the train that goes through the valley. There's also a new lift that links Zell am Ziller to Gerlos. For advanced and expert skiers and boarders, there are some great routes down the Penken Mountains to Schwendau, through the treeline from Ahorn and on the Horberg a number of longer runs like the Schafskopf mogul piste.

Over the 50km of local resort slopes, all abilities are well catered for, but you can see the real attraction is the vast area of the Zillertal ski area. For boarders and freestyle skiers, the terrain park and half pipe are obvious attractions. Across the ski area there are fantastic off-piste opportunities, which on powder days are great. But don;t forget you can also head to Mayrhofen as the Burton fun park is based there. The neighbouring resort villages of Gerlos, Hippach, Wald and Krimml are easily accessed, and the Zillertal Super Ski Pass is also valid for the Ski Arena Wildkogl in Neukirchen on the Grossvenediger.

Ski area :

If you ski Zell am Ziller you are also in the ski region of Zillertal along with the following resorts; Finkenberg, Gerlos, Hintertux, Mayrhofen, Zell am Ziller .

Off the slopes

The village of Zell am Ziller is home to a number of small inns, lounges, bistros and cafés, offering a mix of traditional Zillertal specialties and more familiar international dishes. Though not vibrant, the après ski here is friendly and busy, it's relaxed in a way only the Austrian's can do relaxed - in a lively way. There's plenty to do away from the slopes, including sledding, ice hockey or trying the fantastic 7 km (4.5 miles) floodlit tobogganing run! You can also hike the beautiful snow-covered countryside.

WE LIKE

  • Intermediate terrainis second to none - some awesome reds throughout the resort
  • The Zillertal SuperSki pass - great value for money with some amazing terrain on offer
  • The après-ski is a relaxed affair and pretty unsophisticated - but great fun!

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Unfortunately all links between resorts, apart from the new link to Gerlos, are via road or train
  • For really good skiers, you will have to go to the other linked resorts
  • Low altitude means at foot of pistes snow can get slushy at start or end of season
