Ski Oberau

Ski Oberau and you're in the heart of the Wildschönau valley between Auffach and Niederau. Popular with families you have a small range of pistes for skiing and snowboarding and with Innsbruck just an hour away, ski transfers are easy.

Where

Found in Austria's Tyrol region, ski Oberau for great beginner and intermediate slopes close to home, with the Wildschonau ski area surrounding and linking this resort to it's neighbouring resorts of Niederau and Auffach, offering a greater variety of terrain for visitors. The snow is good and the pace relaxed, making for a great holiday in this charming village. With the two airports of Munich and Innsbruck around an hours transfer - it's very accessible too.

On the slopes

Ski Oberau and beginners and intermediates will be happiest. You'll find wide nursery slopes and a highly recommended ski school if you are just starting out. There's now an eight-person gondola that will whisk you up to the Markbachjoch novice's plateau at 1,500m. For boarders there is a half pipe at Auffach and a boarder cross course in Niederau, while for experts, the black runs on the upper slopes of Schatzberg are the place to go. Although slopes close to home will not stretch you too much - the interlinked resorts offer enough for everyone - and if they don't you can always take a short drive into the Ski Welt ski area.

Ski area :

If you ski Oberau you are also in the ski region of Wildonschönau along with the following resorts; wildonschonau.

Off the slopes

Oberau is quieter than its near neighbour Niederau, though you'll still find something to suit all tastes. There is some après-ski in hotels and bars and as it's Austria, it can get very lively if you want it to. When eating out you can stick to the tried and true favourites, or you can enjoy local fare such as fondue. You'll also find bars and clubs offering music and dancing. Other activities include moonlight sleigh rides, skating, bowling, paragliding, and tobogganing

WE LIKE

  • Within the ski area there's some great terrain for all - particularly for beginners and intermediates
  • Close tothe resort is definitely beginner and family orientated with 7 drags for small beginner slopes along one road
  • Beautiful small tirolean village - that happens to have some good slopes around it

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Smaller than Niederau, it has less après-ski - but still ok!
  • Access a bit of a pain to the main slope area, bus or car
  • This resort best used as a base - you can drive into the SkiWelt in abtou 30 minutes for lots more pistes!
