This is a traditional town with a great atmosphere, an important regional shopping and tourist centre famous for its beautiful cathedral and the nearby Liechtenstein gorge. You can access in under an hour from Salzburg airport, making that the preferred option for many. Other airports include Munich and Klagenfurt, at around 2-2.5 hour transfers.

On the slopes

Ski St Johann im Pongau and you have 19km of local slopes aimed solely at beginners and intermediates. Split between blues and reds, it is not a resort that will keep you busy close to home. However, you can access to the Ski Amadé area via the hamlet of Alpendorf, just a 3km bus ride away - with more than 860 km of slopes and some 270 lifts allowing you to explore an almost unlimited range of terrain. Beginners will find easy nursery slopes to get them started, intermediates will enjoy miles of long cruising runs, while for experts there are off-piste challenges spread throughout the region.
