Where
There's much to recommend that you ski Flachau this winter. Based in the district of Pongau, the Flachautal valley is in the Upper Ennstal valley amidst the Radstädter Tauern mountain range. Directly linked by ski lifts to the Austrian ski resorts of the Wagrain area this is a very easy resort to get to if you fly to Salburg airport. With four airports in easy reach including Innsbruck and Salzburg you can even do weekends here..

On the slopes
You can ski Flachua and walk out your hotel door to three valleys of skiing. With some great slopes for freeride skiing and boarding as well as some wide cruisy pistes close to home, this is a great resort to consider if you want some great options - especially as the ski Amadé is also on your doorstep with it's 850k combined kms of piste. From family runs to world cup piste, beginner slopes to night time skiing, there's something for everyone quite close to home - and you can also ski-in ski-out of quite a few place.
Intermediate and beginner skiers are particularly well catered for, while boarders will enjoy great slopes and a good Snow Park. This is also the home of the legendary Hermann Maier, and you'll find a ski school run by his father and a snowboard school brother run by his younger brother Alexander. What more do you want!

Off the slopes
Flachau is one of several pretty village resorts centred around the cathedral town of St Johann im Pongau, less than an hour from Salzburg. There is a good variety of restaurants serving both local fare and international favourites - try the Schnitzel or boiled beef and pancakes for a taste of the local food - plus mountain restaurants and sun-terraces for your lunch time stop off. The après-ski scene is good with plenty of bars open till late and it's the traditional Austrian nightlife!

- Check out the 1.5km long floodlit ski run in Flachau for somethgin a little different before (or after) a drink!
- It's a pretty village resort - so you get a traditional alpine setting and great snow

- As a real expert - you'll need to go away from Flachau into the larger ski area
- As a family choose location carefully due to late night bars!
- Altitude means early or late season snow at the bottom and in resort sometimes suffers
