On the slopes

Ski Finkenberg if you're a family and want a great family holiday! Ideal for families, there's a ski school and nursery slopes that are perfect for beginners that are also easy to access. The great thing is also that there are some gentle blue runs at Hasenmulden, near the top of the Penken Mountain. Intermediates will find plenty to occupy them close to home, but experts will probably want to look into the Mayrhofen and Zillertal ski area further to get some real challenges.

With access to the huge Ski Zillertal 3000 ski area on the doorstep, it's not hard to find other choices amongst the Austrian ski resorts nearby. For boarders there's a snow park and half-pipe close to home, but head to Penkenjoch above Mayrhofen. Here there is some great freeriding with some rocky steep slopes and loads of trees to cut through off piste. Finally, there is one shining light for experts close to home, Finkenberg's north-facing Nordhang pistes. There's mogul fields as well as the 'Harakiri' piste on offer (the steepest black run in Austria with a 78% gradient!) but maybe that's too hardcore for most.

Ski area :

If you ski Finkenberg, you are also in the ski region of Zillertal 3000 along with the following resorts; Finkenberg, Gerlos, Hintertux, Mayrhofen, Zell am Ziller .

Off the slopes

Finkenberg is small, picturesque village best suited for families. Après-ski is limited, favourites include Laterndl and Finken-Nest. There's a good choice of traditional restaurants and cafés, including Alt'n Brük'n, Eberl, and the Café Sennhutten. Away from the slopes you'll find plenty to keep you busy - choices include ice-skating, curling, tobogganing, paragliding, bowling, and over 20kms of winter walks. This ski resort doesn't shut down at the end of the winter, with year round glacier skiing available at Hintertux.

WE LIKE

  • Perfect family resort with traditional village and quiet resort
  • Great for beginners and lower intermediates as tons of green and blue runs close to home
  • Access to the Hinterlux glacier as well as Zillertal 3000 with 227km of piste

WE DON'T LIKE

  • Quiet nightlife in terms of clubs however a very enjoyable traditrional après-ski
  • Not many challenges for experts close to home apart from a 78° piste!
  • Largely unsophisticated, but all the more enjoyable for it!
