European Ski Holidays
Europe is arguably one of the best ski locations in the world, with France’s Val d'Isere giving Canada’s Banff and Colorado’s Aspen a real run for their money.
However, if you’re looking for a ski holiday away from the crowds, and better yet away from the world-class price tag, here’s a look at two unlikely contenders on the snow holiday circuit.
For a holiday that’s got it all going on, you needn’t look any further than a quick journey across the continent to Spain.
Many things are quick to come to mind about the Spanish lifestyle, from its sun-drenched beaches, to its delectable sangria and tapas, to its late night flamenco bars.
However, Spain has also earned a reputation as one of the best value ski resort locations in Europe. With it ranking as the second most mountainous country in Europe, after Switzerland, it offers first-class skiing suitable for skiers of all abilities.
This is all complemented by top quality ski schools and a buzzing nightlife which retains a traditional Spanish vibe.
The two main ski options available in Spain are the fashionable resorts of the Spanish Pyrenees, notable for its challenging ski areas, and the southern based Sierra Nevada, which is famous for sun-drenched and snow capped ski runs.
If you’re looking for cheap holidays to Spain, these snow resorts offer a great opportunity to avoid some of the pricier tourist traps, like Barcelona’s Las Ramblas.
In these resorts you’ll find a great selection of authentic Spanish cuisine, both on and off the slopes. When it comes to accommodation, you’re spoilt for choice and whether it’s a backpacker hostel or the luxury of a day spa that you’re looking for, there are hotels in Spain to suit all budgets.
Once again, slopes dusted with freshly powdered snow aren’t the first thing that springs to mind when you think of holidays to Turkey – but this doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
From the markets of Istanbul to the warm waters of the Mediterranean, there are countless attractions worthy of a flight to Turkey and skiing is the latest addition to this extensive list.
The most popular hub for Turkish ski holidays is the Uludağ resort, which is located 36 km south from Bursa. It’s a charming town that is accessible from Istanbul via road, bus or ferry with journey times generally clocking in at less than two hours.
The Uludağ experience comes fully equipped with equipment hire, access to experienced instructors, chair lifts and ice-skating facilities. There’s also a full range of slopes to test your skills on, with around 20 km of ski tracks in total.
If you’re looking for a bit more of a challenge, the Palandoken ski resort near Erzurum could be the perfect choice.
Coming in as the highest and coldest ski location in Turkey, Erzurum offers the best snow conditions and some of the most challenging tracks in the country.
With a ski centre equipped to host a range of international ski tournaments, there’s an abundance of affordable accommodation on offer, so your stay needn’t cost a fortune.
